Purpose: The job of coach is done for the purpose of instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formation of positive values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
Reports to: Athletic Director and Principal
Essential Functions

Develop a written philosophy statement and conduct a preseason meeting with parents and players to discuss acceptable player behavior, practice procedures, substance abuse policy and other guidelines that relate to program management.

Determine the system of play.

Establish goals and objectives.

Have a thorough knowledge of all district and MHSAA policies and be responsible for their implementation.

Understand and follow the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.

Establish a working relationship with the middle school and elementary coaches.

Continue professional growth by attending classes, clinics, workshops, and affiliations with professional organizations.

Conduct oneself as a positive role model.

Assist athletic director and principal in hiring assistant coaches.

Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth by urging them to attend clinics and workshops.

Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.

Report all rule violations or suspected violations to the school athletic director.

Consult with the athletic director and principal, or his/her designee, în matters of purchasing equipment, scheduling, and coaching assignments.

Work to develop positive athlete-teacher relationships. Initiate during the season grade checks and conduct checks, if necessary.

Document and file forms that show all athletes on roster have a physical, signed parent consent form, eligibility clearance for interscholastic competition, and insurance to participate in athletics. Each coach must establish eligibility of an athlete prior to practice and/or participation in any sport.

Turn in team rosters of the complete squad to the athletic director.

Develop a sports specific safety plan.

Have all team members complete the STAR Sportsmanship Program.

Be personally responsible for the collection, inventory, and proper storage of
equipment and have athletic fines resolved by the end of the season.

Prepare travel rosters and itineraries prior to the 48 hours of departure.

Complete all paperwork in a timely manner prior to events.

Maintain supervision at practice or contest until all athletes have left the athletic area.

Be responsible to see that every injury is properly taken care of.

Be responsible for locker room supervision before and after games that are home and away.

Inspect locker room with the visiting coach before and after the contest.

Ride the team bus to and from practices or contests.

Require appropriate behavior on road trips by supervising students.

Promote and encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and ethical standards of conduct both on and off the field. Promote morale and team spirit. Stress the benefits derived from wholesome athletic competition.

Encourage athletes to compete in other sports-never discourage an athlete from competition.

Forewarn all participants that involvement in physical confrontation could result in removal from game and/or suspension from subsequent games.

Maintain a yearly inventory of all new and used equipment.

Conduct in-service clinics during offseason with staff and middle school coaches.

Conduct his/her program in a way that maintains competitive edge to include regular practice and implementation of off-season work.

Work with athletic director in developing a yearly budget.

Work with the media to develop a positive relationship.

When giving post-game interviews, give credit to your coaches and players when warranted and to your opponent as well.

Refrain from criticizing officials and never use profanity.
